Design philosophy
My aim is to design gardens that invite exploration and contemplation. Garden that will grow, change, and evolve throughout the seasons. Gardens that are sustainable and resilient. Gardens that nurture both ourselves, our relationships, and the natural world.
Design goals
To design a garden that is a safe haven for people, plants and wildlife. A garden that inspires people to care more for their local ecosystem. To design a garden that will provide ecological services (shelter, shade, food, water management). To design a dynamic garden which will change through the seasons and delight all the senses. To design a garden that can be cared for with enviromentally friendly gardening practices.
About me
I am a passionate gardener. I have 25+ years of gardening experience on Mayne Island. Notable garden projects include: cultivation and propagation of Old Roses; the development of a Japanese Garden on our property; the planting and maintenance of a vineyard; training an espaliered cider apple grove; and establishing a Garry Oak truffiere. I have a Garden Design Diploma and the Royal Horticultural Society Level 2 Horticultural Certificate of Principles of Plant Growth and Development (with Distinction).

Consultation and Design
Leslie Ann Garden Design, offers consultation and/or design services. Is your garden not working for you? Are there problem areas? Or does your garden lack interest at certain times of the year? I can suggest ways to improve your site, garden layout, and or plant selection. Starting from scratch? Great! Let's work together to design a garden you will love. Services exclude garden installation, hardscaping, or garden maintenance services.
Plant Propagation
Old Roses, Perennials
I propagate Old Roses (roses that existed before 1867) and perennials. Plants will be available intermittently at my Pop Up Nursery. Follow my Instagram for notifications about pop up dates and/or email me for a list of available Old Roses. I have over 40 varieties in the garden and propagate different varieties each year.

Choosing plants that perform well together over four seasons can be tricky! I can help solve these common design problems. I can assess your site (light levels, soil types, drainage, deer) and suggest plants, and plant combinations, that will not just survive but thrive in your garden.
Planting Design
Design Services
I will develop a planting scheme that has lasting structure, and offers both unity and contrast of form, texture and colour. I will design a garden that attracts wildlife and supports biodiversity in your garden. The design process includes: initial consultation; site analysis, site survey and photos; conceptual planting design drafted to scale; planting bed designs; plant installation guidelines; and a plant maintenance schedule.
